An automatic watch winds itself from the motion of your wrist and typically runs to within a few seconds a day. Both are real watches. How each one works
Quartz uses a battery to vibrate a tiny quartz crystal at a precise frequency, which drives the hands. Automatic uses a mainspring wound by a weighted rotor that turns as you move; no battery is involved. One is electronic, the other purely mechanical.
Accuracy
Quartz wins on raw accuracy, usually within 15 seconds a month. A good automatic runs within roughly 10 to 20 seconds a day and needs occasional resetting. If never being wrong matters most, quartz is the honest answer.
Maintenance and longevity
Quartz needs a new battery every few years and little else. An automatic needs no battery but benefits from a service every several years to stay healthy. A well-kept mechanical watch can run for decades, which is part of its appeal.
Cost
At the same price, quartz usually buys more visible finishing because the movement is cheaper to produce. Automatic asks you to pay for the mechanism itself. Neither is better value in the abstract; it depends on whether you are paying for the look or the engineering.
The feel question
This is what most buyers are really asking. An automatic has a sweeping seconds hand and a sense of something alive on the wrist. Quartz ticks once per second and simply works. Many people own both for exactly this reason.
Which suits you
Choose quartz for grab-and-go accuracy, a slim case and low upkeep. Choose automatic if you want the mechanism, the sweep and a watch you can keep for the long term. Be honest about how you will actually use it.
